Why Your
Competitor Shows Up Above You on Google Maps (and How to Pass Them)
Google ranks local businesses on relevance, distance and prominence.
Here is how to find out why a
Every week we look at Google Maps rankings for local businesses: restaurants, auto shops, learning centers, salons. The same story shows up again and again. The business with the best food or the best service is not always the one on top of the map. The one on top is usually the one that gives Google the clearest reasons to put it there.
If a competitor keeps showing up above you, this post will help you figure out why. If you already hold the top 3 spots for every search that matters to you, feel free to skip it.
First, ask yourself these questions
Be honest. These are the same questions we ask owners on an audit call.
- When a customer searches for what you sell from a mile or two away, do you show up in the top 3 on the map, or does your competitor?
- Does your competitor have more reviews than you, or newer ones?
- When did you last post an update, an offer or a photo on your Google profile?
- Do your categories and services on Google match the words customers actually type?
- How many calls do you think you missed last month because someone chose the business above you?
If you answered “my competitor” or “I am not sure” to a few of these, you are not alone. Most owners have never seen their rank from anywhere other than their own counter, and that view is misleading.
How Google decides who shows up first
Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot move your building, but you can influence the other two every single week.
- Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Your primary category, secondary categories, services, description and attributes all tell Google what you do.
- Distance is how far you are from the person searching. This is why your rank changes block by block across town.
- Prominence is how well known and trusted you look. Reviews, review replies, photos, activity on your profile and consistent listings across the web all feed into it.
When a competitor ranks above you, it is usually because they are winning on relevance, prominence or both.
How to pass them, in three stages
1. Fix what Google sees
Start with the basics, because they carry the most weight. Pick the most accurate primary category. Add every secondary category and service that truly fits. Write a description that uses the plain words your customers use. Double check your hours, phone number, website link and address so they match everywhere else your business is listed.
2. Out work them every week
Prominence is earned over time. Post an update or offer every week. Add new photos every month. Reply to every review, good or bad, in a friendly and specific way. Ask every customer for a review, not just the ones you think are happy, and make it easy with a link or a QR code. A profile that stays active looks like a busy, trusted business, to customers and to Google.
3. Measure it the right way
Searching your own business name from your own location tells you almost nothing. Rankings change with distance, so the only fair way to measure is a grid of checks across your whole area. That is what a rank heatmap shows: where you are in the top 3, where you slip, and where a competitor owns the map.
Do the math for your business
Take the number of customers who find you on Google each month and your average ticket. If moving from rank 7 to rank 3 on your main search brought in even 10 more customers a month at $40 each, that is $400 a month, or $4,800 a year, from one keyword. Most businesses have several keywords worth winning.
