Why Your Restaurant Doesn't Show Up for “Catering Near Me” (and How to Fix It)

Catering is one of the most valuable searches a restaurant can win. One office lunch or family party can be worth more than a whole night of walk ins. Yet when we run rank checks for restaurants, catering is where most of them are invisible. The dine in searches look fine, and then “catering near me” shows a map full of competitors.

This post shows you how to check where you stand and what to fix. If your restaurant already shows up in the top 3 for catering searches across your area, you can skip it.

Ask yourself

  • When someone a few miles away searches “catering near me” or “[your cuisine] catering”, does your restaurant show up in the top 3 on the map?
  • Does your Google profile even mention catering: in your categories, services, description and posts?
  • Do you have a catering menu or catering page linked from your profile?
  • How many catering inquiries did you get last month, and how many do you think went to the restaurant above you?

If you are not sure, you are probably missing orders you never hear about. Nobody calls to tell you they picked someone else.

Why restaurants miss catering searches

Google shows businesses that clearly match the search. If your profile is all about dine in and never says “catering” in the places Google reads, it has little reason to show you for catering searches, even if you cater every week. Meanwhile, a competitor that lists catering as a service, posts catering offers and has reviews mentioning catering looks like the obvious match.

Here is what changing that can look like. For one restaurant we work with, the search “indian catering” started at an average map rank of 20, with 0% top 3 coverage. After two months of steady work, the heatmap showed a new green zone around the restaurant where it now ranks in the top 3, and the average rank had improved to 16.3. Catering takes patience, but it moves.

How to start winning catering searches, in three steps

1. Tell Google you cater

Add catering as a service on your Google Business Profile. If Google offers a catering category that truly fits your business, add it as a secondary category. Mention catering in your description in plain words, like “we cater office lunches, weddings and family parties.” Link your catering menu or catering page from your profile and your website.

2. Show it every week

Post a catering offer or a photo of a catering spread regularly: a tray lineup, an office lunch setup, a party buffet. Ask every catering customer for a review after the event, the same way you ask every guest. Google does not allow you to tell guests what to write, and you do not need to: people who ordered catering naturally describe the office lunch or the party, and those detailed reviews help both future customers and Google understand what you do.

3. Measure catering separately

Track “catering near me” and “[your cuisine] catering” as their own keywords on a rank heatmap, across your whole delivery area. Catering customers often search from offices and neighborhoods miles away, so a check from your own counter tells you nothing. Watch the green zone grow month by month.

Do the math

Say an average catering order is $400. If better visibility brings in just three extra catering orders a month, that is $1,200 a month and $14,400 a year, often with better margins than dine in. For many restaurants, catering is the fastest way a stronger Google profile pays for itself.

Your next step

You can start today: add catering to your profile, post one catering photo and ask your next catering customer for a review. If you want it handled every week, GurooAI sets up catering on your profile, posts your catering offers and tracks your catering searches on a monthly heatmap.
